Written by Nate Richards EA | Jan 01, 2018

Receiving a tax notice or letter is never a pleasant experience. It can be confusing and frustrating if you don't understand why you received the notice in the first place.  That's why we wrote The Ultimate Guide to Tax Notices and created a tax notice library filled with the most common tax notices and letters you might receive.  We believe the process of staying compliant with your taxes should be as effortless as possible.

General Information

  • What is the notice number?  LTR4883C
  • What government agency sends this notice?  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
  • What is this notice about?  The IRS needs to verify your identity because someone filed (or attempted to file) a federal income tax return under your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. If you didn’t file the return in question, you must let the IRS know as you may be a victim of identity theft.
  • What should you do if you receive this notice?
    • Call the Taxpayer Protection Program Hotline: Use the number provided in your letter 4883C.
    • Have documentation ready: Include the letter, the tax return mentioned, a prior year return if you have one, and any supporting schedules or forms.
    • Notify the IRS if you didn’t file: Alert them right away if you suspect fraud.
    • Consider representation if needed: An authorized representative can call on your behalf if Form 2848 is on file, but you should be available to verify your identity if possible.

FAQs & Additional Information

  • What happens if I don’t verify immediately? The IRS won’t process your tax return, issue refunds, or credit overpayments to your account until they confirm your identity.
  • What if I can’t verify by phone? You may need to schedule an in-person appointment at a local IRS office and bring all required documentation.
  • What happens after I successfully verify? The IRS will process your return. Expect up to 9 weeks to receive your refund or credit overpayment unless other issues arise.
